WHY THIS GOAL:
Globally, the UN’s number one Sustainable Development Goal is to eradicate poverty. Several of the other UN goals, such as ending hunger, ensuring clean water, and improving general education and health, are supported as progress is made on this goal.
This may seem far removed from us in Denmark, but poverty is tackled through decent jobs and economic growth, especially where incomes are lowest. That is the case in the world’s poorest countries, and it is also where women are hit hardest due to lack of gender equality, access to resources and education, high child mortality, hunger, and climate disasters.
This inequality is something we, from one of the richest countries in the world, have a responsibility to address. The development and growth we enjoy today have come at a high price, leading to significant CO₂ emissions that have caused the planet’s temperature to rise faster than ever before.
Paradoxically, the consequences hit the world’s poorest and most vulnerable nations first and hardest.
OUR MEASURABLE LOCA GOAL NO. 17: GLOBAL GOALS & THE WORLD – TODAY AND IN THE FUTURE
The richest 10% of the world’s population earn up to 40% of its total income. While very few have too much, far too many have far too little – and women are affected the most.
We must take action, and at LOCA we continually seek Danish and international partnerships for initiatives that contribute to economic growth, reduced inequality, and greater gender equality in the world’s poorest countries.
We are, among other things, a member of the Global Compact, committing us to actively work with its 10 principles regarding human rights, labor rights, the environment, anti-corruption, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
In 2021, we began a partnership with PlanBørnefonden to support their efforts to reduce inequality and promote gender equality in some of the world’s most vulnerable areas.
Through PlanBørnefonden, LOCA sponsors the education or improved living conditions of one girl in one of the world’s most vulnerable countries for every full-time employee we have in Denmark.
In 2025, LOCA supports 50 girls in the world’s poorest regions, and our goal will always be to help at least one girl for every full-time employee we have in Denmark.
